The dishwasher (Whirlpool) will not stay running. I push the door in and it starts to run, but then stops... I suspect it is the locking mechanism - needs to be adjusted or replaced. Thanks

Dishwasher repairs can be complex, especially when they involve replacement of mechanical parts inside the appliance. Never attempt dishwasher repair before switching of the power supply to the unit, and if you have any doubts about what you are doing, stop immediately and call a dishwasher repair contractor. If you have basic DIY skills, there are common dishwasher repair problems that you may fix at home. For instance, a dishwasher that fails to clean dishes properly may be suffering from a lack of wash water. In such cases, the problem may be traced to a defective water inlet valve that is located at the bottom left or right hand side of the appliance. A clogged filter may also cause cleaning problems, especially if your dishwasher model has filters that have to be cleaned manually. Newer models come with self cleaning filters that don't have to be clean.
Cleaning problems are common with dishwashers. Most of these are caused when the machine does not receive enough water to wash the dishes. This is usually linked to a defective water inlet valve. You can find this valve at the bottom right or left of the appliance. Cleaning problems may also be caused because of clogged internal filters. This is especially true of dishwashers that have filters which need periodic cleaning. Your product manual will detail instructions for cleaning the filter. Look for a clogged drain valve that allows water to drain out while the wash cycle is on. Dishwasher repairs often involve a failure of the water to enter the dishwasher. This is again caused by a defective water inlet valve. Replace this, and the problem should correct itself. If your dishwasher fails to drain itself properly, then look for a clogged drain line. You may find the clog at the location where the drain line is attached to the garbage disposal unit or your main drain line
For dishwasher repairs of a noisy appliance, look for a failing water inlet valve. The shuddering of the valve can shake the water lines leading to the noise. Your dishwasher's motor bearings can wear out causing noise. Also, look for worn out heater fan bearings, or pieces of food debris that are clogged in the pump.
